Jean-Claude Mas has been perfecting his Cuvée Secrète range for the past 7+ years now and, although finding good quality Pinot Noirs from southern France is not so easy, this example provides plenty of pleasure at the price point. Bright and lively in the glass with aromas of subtle spice and a hint of vanilla are followed by elegantly soft cherry and red berry flavours and enough tannin to balance and give length.
About the Estate
Domaines Paul Mas is one of the great names of the Languedoc, combining deep regional heritage with Jean-Claude Mas’ modern, expressive winemaking style. Based near Pézenas, the family-owned estate works across a remarkable range of southern French terroirs, producing wines that are polished, generous and full of character. We work with Jean-Claude on a small but distinctive part of the wider portfolio, including biodynamically managed Mas des Tannes, organically farmed Arrogant Frog from Limoux and Cuvée Secrète – a no-added-sulphur blend that gives a particularly pure expression of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Across the range, Paul Mas wines offer ripe fruit, smooth textures and easy charm, making them especially appealing for those who enjoy a more generous, modern southern French style.

I love this Pinot Noir, feels like you've driven up to the vineyard a brought straight from the winemaker. It is not that smooth, easy drinking Pinot Noir like from a supermarket but has a very spikey, sharp and raw taste. It wears its no added Sulphur badge with pride.

I usually enjoy Pinot Noir as it’s generally smooth and fruity but I found this quite bitter and astringent.
