Bodegas Piqueras is a fourth-generation estate, founded in 1915 in Almansa, southeastern Spain, where the semi-desert climate is ideal for organic winemaking, with abundant sunshine, low disease pressure and cool nights that help preserve freshness and aromatics. Head winemaker Juan Pablo Canto Serrano brings impressive experience to the estate, having graduated in Oenology with distinction before training with Vega Sicilia and working harvests at Pintia in D.O. Toro and Alión in Ribera del Duero. A later harvest at Villa Maria Estate in New Zealand also shaped his approach to freshness, fruit purity and careful protection from oxidation. The estate works with traditional Almansa grapes including Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell, grown across vineyards such as Los Timonares, at 2,500 feet above sea level, and Los Cuchillos, home to old bush vines over 60 years old. Biodiversity is encouraged throughout, with sheep grazing between the vines and their manure used as natural fertiliser, while the same low-intervention mindset continues in the cellar, including wines made with no added sulphites and naturally minimal sulphur levels.
