Syrah wine tends to be closer to Northern Rhone reds, with smokier flavours and heavier tannins. Shiraz wine, on the other hand, has a more "New World" flavour, with rip berry flavours, higher alcohol content, and more approachable when young. Whatever their style, this grape can produce wonderful wines, and it's often blended with other grapes such as Grenache (these two grapes often form the basis of Côtes du Rhône wines).
