Description
The Georgians have been developing this style of wine for 8,000 years and this unique style of white wine is becoming more and more popular recently. This vibrant, small-batch “orange” wine is crafted from biodynamic Muscat grapes and extended skin contact, giving it its striking hue and gently tannic texture. Aromas of dried citrus peel, apricot and wild herbs lead into a beautifully textured palate with notes of orange blossom, tea-like spice and subtle grip. Fresh, expressive and wonderfully unconventional, this characterful Languedoc white shines with tapas, spicy dishes or creamy cheeses.
- Joanna Simon’s Wine of the Week: “Aromatic, biodynamic, dry, fresh and altogether lovely, Rare Orange is from Bertie Eden’s 45-ha triple-certified biodynamic Château Maris estate in the Minervois… the palate is round and textured with the lightest touch of tannin.” (2024 vintage)
- 90 points, Tom Cannavan: “Sweet and ripe Muscat fruit on the palate, but the wine is bone dry, a hint of seeds and nuts with that pithy citrus acid that gives this some bite and good freshness.” (2021 vintage)
About the Estate
Recognised by Wine Spectator as one of the most environmentally friendly wineries in the world, Château Maris is the project of Bertie Eden, one of the early pioneers of organic and biodynamic winemaking in the Languedoc. After working across some of the world’s most renowned wine regions, he fell under the spell of La Livinière and established the estate in 1997, determined to make wines that are both terroir-driven and environmentally responsible.
That philosophy runs through the whole estate. In the vineyard, every decision is shaped by long-term care for the land, and even in the winery itself, where hemp bricks, solar power and a naturally low-energy design form a remarkable carbon-negative cellar. In the cellar, a thoughtful, low-intervention approach allows the wines to express the freshness, depth and wild beauty of La Livinière.
