Description

A refined Margaux from Château Durfort-Vivens, the historic Second Growth estate classified in 1855 and now certified organic and biodynamic. Le Plateau comes from 25-year-old vines grown on deep sandy gravel soils on the Soussans plateau, with the 2020 blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Fermented with natural yeasts and aged for sixteen months in clay vessels and barriques, it shows blackcurrant, black cherry and plum fruit layered with tobacco spice, cedar and savoury oak. Firm but ripe tannins, lifted acidity and a long, polished finish give this elegant Margaux both charm and structure.

  • 92 Points, Falstaff, ‘Dark forest berries, cassis, ripe cherries, subtle fresh herbs, fine tobacco nuances… ripe tannins, elegant and balanced, mineral and long lasting, notes of oak on the finish…’  (2020 vintage)
  • 94 Points, Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2020 vintage)
  • 91 Points, Jane Anson (2020 vintage)

About the Estate

Somewhat under the radar, this 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces excellent Left Bank Bordeaux reds. Since the 14th century, the Durfort de Duras family has been one of the great landowners in Médoc, and during the 17th century, their once hunting lodge was turned into a wine-growing estate. In 1758, the château was sold to George Ainslie, a Scottish wine merchant, whose youngest daughter would marry the Chevalier de Vivens. It was their son, Viscount de Vivens, who would add his name to that of Durfort in 1824. Classified as a 2nd cru estate in 1855, today it is owned by Gonzague Lurton, who started to convert the estate to be organic and biodynamic in 2009. In 2016, he obtained both organic and biodynamic certifications for Château Durfort-Vivens, the first Margaux Grand Cru Classé to be doubly certified. A wonderful expression of the Margaux appellation.
